Kashmiri carnelian necklace

This extraordinary necklace hails from the Kashmir region, renowned for its rich jewelry tradition based on hand-pressed metal and the use of semi-precious stones. The centerpiece of the piece is a convex, hexagonal disc adorned with intricate ornamentation and six red carnelian cabochons – a stone valued for its protective properties and life energy.

The pendant hangs on double rows of links, complemented by rectangular and triangular elements with floral embossing. Chains with ball-shaped ends hang freely from each row, creating subtle sounds when moved – just like the jewelry once worn by women during tribal ceremonies and dances.

The entire piece is connected with a cotton string, allowing for easy adjustment of the necklace's length. The construction and decorative motifs are an example of the craftsmanship typical of Kashmiri workshops – heavy, raw, and at the same time full of meaning and symbolism.

It is not just a decoration, but an ethnic story encapsulated in metal – a testament to the culture and heritage of the mountain communities on the border between India and Pakistan.
