And the truth is simple: emerald is beautiful, but demanding. And if someone is selling it to you like a diamond in green, he either doesn't know what he's talking about or is counting on the fact that you don't.

From a gemmology perspective, emerald is a variety of beryl (_Be3Al2(_SiO3₎₆) whose green color is created by admixtures of chromium and/or vanadium. This sounds dry, but it has gigantic practical implications: in nature, the conditions for the formation of emeralds are so specific that the stones almost always have inclusions. And this is not a "defect" in the marketing sense - it's a species trait. In an emerald, purity can be a luxury far greater than in many other stones.

In the beryl family you have a whole gallery of colors: aquamarine, morganite, heliodor, goshenite. Therefore, in emeralds, it is very important not to buy only "color from the screen", but to understand the parameters: transparency, type of inclusion, behavior in light, and preferably have confirmation of identification.

A stone can be so heavily filled that in practice its durability and stability are different than you expect. There is also the subject of so-called doublets and triplets, where a thin layer of emerald material is "supported" by another material - this is sometimes used in cheaper jewelry. I am not demonizing: there are some people who simply want the effect. But it must be called by name.

Origins: Colombia, Zambia, Brazil and the rest of the world - the myth of "the best always from there."

Colombia is a legend in the world of emeralds, but legend does not automatically mean that any stone from Colombia is better than any stone from Zambia or Brazil. Colombian emeralds are often associated with warm, deep greens and "soft" light, while Zambian emeralds can go to a cooler, sometimes slightly bluish green. Brazilian ones can vary from great to mediocre. Ultimately, it's the specific specimen that matters, not the passport.

If the stone is beautiful, has good color and reasonable clarity, and its processing is honestly described, then "Zambia" is not inferior just because it doesn't sound like "Colombia." Emerald is extremely sensitive to lighting. In daylight it can show depth and saturation, while in artificial light - especially warm light - it can look different: more yellow, sometimes heavier.
