Spiral earrings - spirals and their meaning

Spiral earrings have been known to lovers of ethnic jewelry for a long time. However, not everyone knows that spirals are a sacred symbol, representing, among other things, the journey and change of life. Do spiral earrings still have some hidden meaning?

Spiral symbol as one of the oldest in the world

The spiral without a shadow of a doubt is one of the oldest symbols in the world. It appears in the oldest cultures around the world and has many meanings - such as progress, direction and expansion. The Greeks associated spirals with infinity, balance and consciousness. The spiral motif is one of the favorite designs of ethnic jewelry lovers. It is also one of the most popular types of archaic Greek ear ornaments, known from actual archaeological finds. In the case of Greek jewelry, a spiral is produced most often in the shape of an omega, which tapers toward the stubby ends.

Spirals really have a long history, especially in the history of Greek jewelry. The first examples of this type of Oriental jewelry date back to the 9th century BC. Undoubtedly, too, the spiral is one of the oldest symbols of human spirituality - carved or painted in rocks many thousands of years ago, after all, on probably every continent.

The meaning of spiral earrings

The symbolism of spiral earrings is also based on movement and gradual development, but also growth, expansion, cosmic energy or sun symbolism. Ethnic jewelry in the form of spiral earrings is also a symbol representing the continuous cycle of birth, life, death and regeneration. Spirals were therefore often deposited in various forms, such as in burial sites, vases, clothing, weapons and many other objects.

Spiritually, the spiral symbol can also represent the path leading from external consciousness (materialism, ego, external perception) to the inner soul (enlightenment, invisible essence, nirvana, cosmic consciousness). The spiral symbolism is also interpreted as movements between the inner world (intuitive, immaterial) and the outer world (matter, manifested). Moreover, in terms of rebirth or growth, the symbolism of spiral earrings can also represent the consciousness of nature.

The meaning of the double spiral on earrings

The double spiral, for example, is found on many Celtic graves and is associated with the sun, as well as with the idea of death and re-birth. It can signify the transfer of energy from the body to the soul, or the body giving life back to the earth. In relation to the sun, the double spiral on ethnic jewelry is believed to represent the solstice or equinox. Sometimes the double spiral appears as a loose spiral, combined with a clockwise tight spiral. Jewelry constructed in this way is believed to represent the large, warm summer sun and the smaller, winter and shrinking sun.

Spiral as a multicultural symbol

The spiral is an age-old, intuitive symbol of spiritual development and our identity with the universe. It is therefore found in cultures around the world, being reflected in shamanism, snake cults, dragon traditions, geomancy, magic, mysticism and ritual art and dance. The spiral symbol in various forms can be found, for example, on sculptures throughout Europe, where many tribes traveled. This has led to the belief that the symbol can also represent migration and eternal movement.

The spiral appears constantly on ethnic earrings in many cultures, taking on many different meanings. It is an icon of cosmic wisdom, with which our ancestors used to be quite strongly associated. Thus, the spiral is a kind of sacred symbol, which is supposed to remind holders of oriental earrings of our evolution and life. The earrings can also be used as a personal protective talisman.

The spiral seems to be a simple symbol, but one should not be fooled by its meaning. After all, the spiral is a symbol of great concepts - like consciousness or creation. No wonder, then, that earrings with a spiral pattern are so popular among jewelry lovers today.
